Defazio New Roof

 On March 2, 2018 a storm with winds over 78mph blew through the Hoover Farm Subdivision in Laytonsville, MD damaging several homes.  The Defazio's roof was hit pretty hard.

 Wind ripped the 25 year "builder's shingles" from the roof in several places.


 We carefully waterproofed the home with temporary "tarping," securing the home from further damage, and the roof replacement process begins ...

 The 25 year "3-tab builder's shingles are being removed ...


 Old roofing and tarpaper are stripped down to the OSB (oriented strand board) plywood.


 Plywood repairs are made where necessary ...

 Custom aluminum drip edge, ice & water barrier, and synthetic underlayment are skillfully applied before the new shingles are nailed.

 Upgrades from the existing builder's shingles and organic tarpaper (roofing felt) included:
  • Upgrade to 6" custom drip edge at all eaves (gutter edges) 
  • Upgrade to 4" custom drip edge at all rakes (sloped sides of gables) where none existed 
  • Upgrade to "Ice & Water Barrier" at all gutter edges, valleys, and around penetrations 
  • Upgrade from organic 15 lb. tarpaper "felt" underlayment to synthetic underlay 
  • Upgrade from builder's shingles to CertainTeed Landmark Architectural Lifetime Shingles 
  • Upgrade from builder's grade metal ridge vent to High Performance Shingle Vent II Ridge Vent System.

 A New Shingle Vent II System will naturally circulate more air through the attic, and will also: 
  • Stabilize the attic air temperature with no extra energy cost. 
  • Keep the insulation drier thus making it more effective. 
  • Lower heating and cooling costs. 
  • Help eliminate dangerous mold and mildew, helping out your allergies, maybe keeping you healthier. 
  • Help prolong the life of plywood, building materials, and insulation. 


 New neoprene/aluminum pipe collars installed; Rustoleum Brand rust resistant paint applied to all pipes, vents, heater exhaust ...

 Nice, straight roofing is attained by utilizing "chalk lines" first!

 The custom aluminum drip edge helps deposit rain water directly into the gutter system, protecting against plywood and fascia wood damage.  Most roofers don't do anything like this ...

 The re-roofing of the main house is a done deal!  Now ...

 The 25 year organic based shingles are in pretty rough shape.

 A few sections of 1/2" CDX plywood had rotted away.  No worries, they'll be replaced.

 Satellite dish removed and replaced.

 And finally, the entire roofing project has been professionally completed!
